Wednesday morning we hit the blacktop of I-95 and stopped about 500 miles later just outside of Dillion, SC, and less than a mile from the NC border at "South of the Border". If any of you have ever traveled I-95, you've seen the billboards for it at least 100 miles away. Billboards with classy phrases like "You never sausage a place. You are a weiner at Pedro's ." (Pedro is the "spokesperson" of the iconic landmark establishment). Never thought we would stop at such a kitschy place, but the campground was surprisingly nice, very convenient, and very reasonable.
South of the Border (signs there were abbreviated SOB....????) started as a beer stand in 1949 by Alan Shafer, who thought it a perfect location since the North Carolina county north of it was dry. The site evolved into over a square mile complex with restaurants, souvenir shops, truck stop, gas station, small amusement park, hotel and campground, all with a Mexican motif. I wonder if that was a spin off of Patsy Clines' hit, "South of the Border, down Mexico way..." will have to look into that.
campsite...no Pedro in sight! |
