David & Kim's Wedding Trip Oct 2013 - FL to SC

On the road again...heading to Rehobeth Beach, DE, to attend our cousin's wedding on Saturday, October 26th.  We are very much looking forward to being there to share David and Kim's special day.  We left Florida's 90 degree weather on Tuesday, the 22nd.  We had a short ride, stopping at Manatee Hammock Campground just north of Cocoa, FL, to visit with Bob's sister Gwen.  We've stayed at the Hammock before....a very nice campsite on the Indian River.  We three had dinner at the Olde Florida Seafood Bar and Grill, a quaint little restaurant with a view of Cape Canaveral across the river.

Wednesday morning we hit the blacktop of I-95 and stopped about 500 miles later just outside of Dillion, SC, and less than a mile from the NC border at "South of the Border".  If any of you have ever traveled I-95, you've seen the billboards for it at least 100 miles away. Billboards with classy phrases like "You never sausage a place.  You are a weiner at Pedro's ." (Pedro is the "spokesperson" of the iconic  landmark establishment).  Never thought we would stop at such a kitschy place, but the campground was surprisingly nice, very convenient, and very reasonable.

South of the Border (signs there were abbreviated SOB....????) started as a beer stand in 1949 by Alan Shafer, who thought it a perfect location since the North Carolina county north of it was dry.  The site evolved into over a square mile complex with restaurants, souvenir shops, truck stop, gas station, small amusement park, hotel and campground, all with a Mexican motif.  I wonder if that was a spin off of Patsy Clines' hit, "South of the Border, down Mexico way..."  will have to look into that.

campsite...no Pedro in sight!
