First Landing is aptly named for the English expedition of 1607 that founded Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in America. It was the first landfall after an ocean journey of 144 days for 3 ships captained by Christopher Newport consisting of 104 men and boys. They named Cape Henry, just a bit south of here, in honor of the then Prince of Wales, Henry Frederick, eldest son of King James. Captain Newport's ships were the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery. The latter two are understandable, but I feel compelled to find out how the first one got her name. The land is rife with history...Bluebeard purportedly hid here in the Narrows...here were fresh water reserves for the Confederate troops. Here also is the northernmost east coast location where subtropical and temperate plants grow together.
And, by the way, HAPPY 37TH ANNIVERSARY, ADELE AND MICHAEL.
