I expected a wooded campsite. This one is like a parking lot, but right along the bay inlet. It was very windy and chilly, and we didn't arrive until almost 5, so after getting the unit set up, we pretty much settled in for the night.
Monday morning, we decided to take a ride to Henlopen State Park, about 20 miles north of here, outside a town called Lewes, which is "the first city in the first state". Lewes is also the port for the ferry to Cape May, NJ. We aren't going to take the ferry to Jersey due to the cool weather and cost with the trailer (over $100) and we aren't sure what we would have to do with Charlie.
Henlopen is what you would expect of a state park...trees and greenery. It has great bike and walking paths, as well as beaches and a fishing pier.
We went back to Seashore afterwards, dropped off Charlie in the trailer, and then headed back north to Dewey Beach and found a very nice restaurant called Big Fish Grill and had lunch. After stuffing ourselves there, we returned to the park and enjoyed the waterviews from the comfort of our warm trailer. Temps are in the high 50's, and it is still windy, so it's quite a change from the 92 degree weather we left a week ago.
Finally! The Chesapeake Bay Tunnel Bridge entrance
Entering the first tunnel. The divided road becomes single lane thru the tunnels.
View of the second span heading south and a gull inbetween
Almost to terra firma
Our site at the seashore state park. Good thing it's cool, and we don't need any shade!
Looking out to the bay across from our campsite
A view of the fishing area and bridge on US 1. The beach area is on the other side of the bridge.
Beach view at Henlopen State Park
Beginning of the path to the fishing pier at Henlopen
Beach view from the pier. I'm sure it's quite a different picture in the summer!
Lewes Cape May Ferry Port which my father & I ended up taking in 2002 because we thought we were en route to the Delaware Memorial Bridge!
Bob's double chocolate cake dessert at the Big Fish Grill...before
and after. (Must admit I had some of the ice cream)
Record blue marlin caught in DE now hanging in the Big Fish Grill. Most of the restaurants in the area were closed for the season, so we were lucky to find one that not only was open, but one that had good food, service, atmosphere and prices.
View of the RV park from the bridge heading south on US 1.
