Pontiac Lake State Recreation Area Waterford MI Sept 4 - 7 2019

High Five for your 5th birthday, Alexander!  Instead of being there, we went 192 miles on Rte 23 (again) from Ohio to Waterford, Michigan.  The road skirted Toledo and Detroit, and traffic was not too bad.  It was not such a breeze at the recreation area. In addition to having trouble finding the campground in the park, we had a bit of a hassle  when we got to the  check-in site. There was a sign on the door "be right back", so we had to wait for the attendant to return from her rounds.  When she did, we paid the additional daily recreation fee for our 3 night stay, got the requisite daily passes, and set out to find our reserved spot.  But to our disappointment, a picnic table had been moved and was blocking the driveway and the electric box was too far away for our electric cord to reach.  I called the office and asked to move to a different site. She said she would do it "as a favor" but normally the process would be to call the reservation office and pay another reservation fee.  I was given about 8 sites that were available for the time we planned on staying.  Thankfully there was one where the power box was close enough for us.  Part of the problem is that the box is intended to be shared by two sites, so they are not close to either one.  And, there are no water or sewer hook ups here either.  I take "credit" for choosing this place...looked good on the website.  But, it wasn't what we expected from a Michigan state park.
After entering the recreation area, we followed the sign to the campground, but when we came to a dirt road, we wondered if we were heading the right way.
and we certainly hoped this wasn't "the" Pontiac Lake!
At this point, we thought we better double back to the park office only to find it was closed for lunch.  Luckily there were hunters there who told us that indeed the way to the campground was the path we had been on, so we turned around once again.
This stone art was at the site we finally decided upon.  After we set up,  we had to make another trip to the check in office to sign a new form for the site change.  All in all, it was two hours from the time we reached the park until we were settled in.

Next to us is a 1.8 mile trail that leads to the beach.  I didn't feel up to walking it, and also I wouldn't want to hike it on my own...can never tell what might be along the way!
The spot we selected ended up being a good one: fairly secluded and across from the potable water pump.
Fellow campers stopped by for a doggie date.  Roscoe loved being out in the woods....lots of new sniffs.
