Cape May, NJ May 14, 2012

It was supposed to rain all day today, and even though we did have  rain at the camp in the morning, we decided to go ahead with our plan to drive down the coast to Cape May, the southern most point in New Jersey.  We didn't think we would be able to play tourist too much, and weren't even sure if we would be able to get to Cape May if the weather got bad.  So, I packed some sandwiches, and we took Charlie Dog with us.  Not only didn't it rain, we even had some blue skies.  We went through several shore towns where the speed limit was 25...Ocean City, Avalon, and Wildwood, to name a few and crossed over at least 4 toll bridges before getting to Cape May.  It is the oldest seaside resort in the country and is named for the Dutch captain, Mey, who chartered the area between 1611-1614.  It is a very quaint town.  We went to the lighthouse state park, another beautiful location.  On the beach was a bunker built during WWII.  Near the welcome center was a jawbone from a baleen whale as well as old anchors.  I couldn't resist a chance for a photo op with Smokey the Bear.  For the ride back, we took Rte 9.  The 111 mile round trip took us 6 hours, but we thoroughly enjoyed all the sights.
