Mono Lake was used as a secret weapons research and testing facility during the 50's and 60's during the Cold War, according to the plaque commemorating "Naval Beach" along the lake's shore. The structures in the last two pictures that are sticking out of the water are the "tufas", calcium structures formed by the mineral content in the water.
